"The best presents come in small packages"…this dictum can be especially true when it comes to Christmas presents.  Christmas presents that do come in small packages usually include gift cards, (which is always something everyone wants to have) or jewelry…which no one snubs their nose at either!.  The creative options are endless.

When I was sixteen, there weren’t any gifts under the tree for me…NONE with my name on it, nothing that even remotely could be for me.  It was the most devastating Christmas ever…until I found out why!

In a small box tucked way back into the tree was a box, but I didn’t know it until everyone else got done opening their packages.  We have a large family and extended family.  Everyone was there that morning and all the Christmas presents were opened. 

I sat there, helping to hand out everyone’s gifts and watching everyone open their Christmas presents…just watched.  Then, my dad unburied himself from his loot and asked me where my gifts were.  I was almost in tears and told him that it must really be true that a lump of coal was given to those who were bad…sixteen was a difficult year for my relationship with my parents. 

He smiled and told me that the Christmas presents for me were in the tree and in my stocking.  I looked at my stocking in dismay and thought that there was probably nothing in there either…no bulges, nothing sticking out from the top…I didn’t understand. 

With everyone watching and my mom sitting back with a smile on her face…my dad handed me two small boxes.  In the first box was a note.  I unwrapped it and told me that I had to trust them, close my eyes and stand up and walk to the back yard.  The Christmas presents for me that year were out in the back yard. 

Where we lived, there was really nothing exciting about the back yard…but I did what the letter said.  To my surprise, there was a new set of skis leaning against the garage.  Complete with zippered bag and new ski boots, I was thrilled…but saw another letter hanging from the tag of the boots. 

It told me that my other Christmas presents were in the garage and that the small box with this note was not to be opened until I stepped into the garage.  Inside, I found a shiny new Honda Accord!  I opened the box and found the keys…it even had a ski rack on top!

Christmas presents that come in small packages have continued to work their way through my life…my husband once gave me a note inside a box for my birthday telling me that he was taking me to the Trek bicycle shop so I could pick out a new mountain bike for our trip next fall to Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia.  Christmas presents in small packages really are the best.

So, if the opportunity presents itself, whether at Christmas time or any other time…take advantage of throwing your recipient a curve…it might be the most fun they’ve ever had getting Christmas presents.
